9. El Salvador, April 1991

Theme(s) State of the environment in El Salvador.
Focus on park management.
Length 2 days.

Target Group
Media and NGO representatives interested in the establishment of REPAC-El Salvador.

Objectives
To form the Salvadorean chapter of REPAC.

To inform journalists on the state of the environment in El Salvador, and in particular of the Cerro Verde National Park.

Context
This was part of the series of national REPAC Seminars.

Participants
19 participants: 11 journalists, 2 government press officers, 6 NGO representatives. Female/ Male Ratio: N/A.

Working Methodology and Activities
There were a total of 6 resource people, including a professor of journalism. The first day of the seminar consisted of a number of presentations by Salvadoran experts, and a role play, "the Court" in which a journalist was accused of not reporting enough on the environment. During the second day a field trip was held, environmental videos from Guatemala were shown and the REPAC chapter was formed.

Documentation Used
A great number of specific papers were prepared, on natural resources and environmental management, as well as role of NGOs as sources of information. Packages of background on organizations and projects were also made available.

Results
Workshop was successful and achieved its objectives: REPAC chapter was formed and participants received good overview of status of the environment.

Several participants produced articles about the seminar.

Evaluation by Participants
It was felt by the participants that they had learned much about their country's environmental condition. Many became quite concerned and committed to educating and informing the public.

Lessons Learned and Recommendations
The new El Salvador chapter of REPAC recommended future activities, several to be implemented with Fundación Montecristo and Fundación Friedrich Ebert (FES).

9. Cerro Verde, Santa Ana, El Salvador, 27-28 April 1991. Fundación Montecristo/Panos Seminar on "Journalism, Conservation and the Environment".

The Fundación Montecristo coordinates 27 environmental youth groups in San Salvador and 5 more in the rural areas. It has 45 individual members and 32 organizational members.

Before the workshop, REPAC had 10 members in El Salvador, and 5 applicants. Organisations involved in this organisational meeting included UNES (which has 12 persons working with the media) and REDES (which has 5 members in E.S.).
