New: 2005 Annual Report

The Panos Institute Caribbean is a regional organization that works to strengthen civil society by helping journalists to cover sustainable development issues that are overlooked and misunderstood, in particular those whose impact transcends national boundaries.

Panos coordinates seminars and production of print, broadcast and electronic materials on themes such as child rights, HIV/AIDS, environmental degradation, gender issues and community solutions to development challenges. Panos undertakes these activities in partnerships with local and regional associations, journalists and NGOs.

Additionally, Panos fosters regional alliances and cross-border collaboration among journalists. Panos Caribbean, through investigative teams, targets trans-border issues, collaborating both on the ground and via electronic networks. Panos allows reporters to work across political and language borders and produce new perspectives on under-reported stories.

Panos Caribbean was established in Washington, DC in 1986 as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation. It was founded simultaneously with Panos Institutes in Paris and London. Each Institute is independently chartered and governed with its own programme to fulfill related missions; however, much work is undertaken jointly. The Panos Institute Caribbean has the following offices:

  1. Panos Haiti, the main office of Panos Caribbean, based in Port-au-Prince since November 1997. Coordinates: (i) Caribbean and Central America programme, (ii) Child Rights, (iii) Haiti programme.
  2. Panos Jacmel. Functions since July 2002 as the Information and Support Centre for the Haiti programme, in particular for child journalist groups.
  3. Panos Jamaica, based in Kingston since February 2004. Coordinates: (i) Regional Information Production, (ii) HIV/AIDS, (iii) Jamaica programme.
  4. Panos Washington, the registered office and a demonstration site and visitor centre to learn more about Panos Caribbean.

Panos is supported by a diversity of donors such as Plan Haiti, Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the international development cooperation agencies of the UK, USA, Denmark and Sweden, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) of the USA, the European Union, the Open Society Institute and UN agencies.

The global network of Panos Institutes also includes: Panos Canada (Vancouver - Canada), Panos Eastern Africa (Kampala - Uganda and Addis Abeba - Ethiopia), Panos London, Panos Paris, Panos South Asia (Kathmandu - Nepal, New Delhi - India, Colombo - Sri Lanka and Karachi - Pakistan), Panos Southern Africa (Lusaka - Zambia) and Panos West Africa (Dakar - Senegal and Bamako - Mali).
